PISC Governing Body in front of the old headquarters - 1966

Founder, Amadeu Correia, with the plans for the current headquarters.

On the eighteenth day of the month of March, nineteen hundred and twenty-two, at eight o’clock in the evening, on First Street, number two hundred and two, a General Assembly was held for the purpose of deciding what name should be given to the Club. After the President gave a brief speech explaining the purpose of the meeting, the members present submitted lists with different proposed names. Among these, the ones that received the highest number of votes were as follows:

  • Portuguese Fraternal Club — four votes

  • Sons of Portugal Club — three votes

  • Portuguese American Club — one vote

  • Portuguese Social Club — twelve votes

After several debates, it was definitively resolved that the name to be given to the Club would be Portuguese Social Club, since it received the greatest number of votes.

Before the President closed the session, the member and Second Secretary of the General Assembly, Belarmino da Fonseca, asked to speak. In a brief speech, he praised Portugal, extolling its name and the patriotism of the Portuguese residents of this city who had the noble and admirable idea of founding the Portuguese Social Club. He concluded by offering a flag representing the symbol of our homeland.

As the late hour of the night did not allow for further discussion, the President scheduled another meeting for the twenty-sixth of the current month at two o’clock in the afternoon, at the Club’s headquarters on First Street, number one hundred and sixty-three.

Elizabeth, New Jersey, March twentieth, nineteen hundred and twenty-two.
