Dear Friends, In our wish to make known the aims and objectives of the Amadeu Correia Scholarship Fund Inc, we want to give you some background information on the person in whose memory this Fund was established. AMADEU CORRELA, a 19-year old Portuguese immigrant who arrived in the U.S A. on September 2, 1920, created a new 'era' in the history of the Portuguese Immigrants who settled in Elizabeth, NJ.

This era' was characterized by a dream' - a vision of hope that was realized through his leadership, determination and loyalty to a cause. The obstacles he and all immigrants had to face were many. He felt the need to unify the Portuguese community as a body, so they would be recognized with respect and consideration while integrating into the American way of life, yet never abandoning the customs, culture and traditions of their native country. To accomplish this, Amadeu Correia convened with a group of friends to express his idea of forming a Club' wherein the Portuguese customs would be maintained. The idea took form and on March 18, 1922, the "Portuguese Instructive Social Club" was established and became the heart of the Portuguese Community.

In 1935, Amadeu Correia was again instrumental in the founding of the Portuguese School formerly known as "Escola 1o de Dezembro and which after his death on January 7, 1986, was named Amadeu Correia School. His quest continued through his involvement in all the Portuguese Associations. He did not stop there ...On his deathbed, Amadeu Correia presented the challenge of continuing his mission by requesting that the family establish a Scholarship Fund, for the purpose of encouraging and recognizing the students of the Portuguese School who learn the Portuguese language, culture and traditions, and to promote pride of their ethnic heritage.

In memory of Amadeu Correia and in fulfillment of his dyingwish, plans for the establishment of the Scholarship Fund weresubmitted and approved by the General Assembly of the PIC on June27,1986.
